Evaluation - Question 5

Evaluation - Question 4

How successful was your product? Why do you think it was successful or unsuccessful?

I think that my product was quite successful because we tried to follow everything off the orginal video such as the black and white effect and the positioning and movement of the camera. However what let the video down was the instability and sharp movements of the camera and timing issues with the actress. The actress copied off all the actions that Adele does in the video but sometimes they were done at the wrong time. Although you can't tell this unless you are watching the original video at the same time. The camera was unsteady as it was hand-held and I was walking with the camera which is why the camera doesn't look that good, but this couldn't be prevented unless we had a dolly, which we don't.

Overall, I think that our product was quite successful because when both the videos are watched simultaneously you can see the similarity in them and how many features we got right.  Plus, the feedback which we received off our peers was very positive which makes me feel as if our product was successful.

Evaluation - Question 3

How has doing this task helped you and why? What have you taken away from this experience?

Evaluation - Question 2

Evaluation - Question 1

What did you find the most challenging and why?

Throughout these three weeks of making our product, our whole group was challenged during the planning, filming and editing process. I would say that the most challenging part during our planning stage was the first step, choosing a song. We spent a lot of time looking on Youtube for fun, yet possible, music videos that we could re-create. Our initial idea was to choose a slow song because we thought that we would be able to focus on the emotion of the song and this would be an easier video to shoot as it doesn't require as many upbeat and quick shots. From this, we looked at Beyonce songs because they are very well-known and her lyrics are very inspirational and emotional to many people. Our first choice of song was If I Were A Boy by Beyonce but we decided against this because, for most of the video, a police uniform is required and no-one in our group had access to this. We looked at many different videos such as Love Never Felt So Good by Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake, Birthday by Katy Perry and I Will Never Let You Down by Rita Ora but we were unable to re-make any of these videos because the mise-en-scene was either too complex or we could not get the right costumes or locations. We then looked at Someone Like You by Adele and realised that this was a video that we could easily re-create as the mise-en-scene was not too complicated. Our whole group, was very happy with this song choice and all we had to do now was decide which minute of the song we wanted to film.

Filming was very fun and a good experience for all of us but it was very challenging due to the very long tracking shot which lasted 42 seconds so we needed to make sure that the camera angles were exactly the same throughout the entire time, the actress moved in the correct way and at the correct time and that her lips were in sync with the music for the full 42 seconds. This was very challenging and required our group to take multiple takes of this shot in order to get it right but once we did a few shots we knew the scene very well and were able to film it almost identical to the real video.

I enjoyed editing the footage because it was fun to see how individual shots can come together to create a music video that looks and sounds effective. The most challenging part of the editing process was creating the fade effect over two shots because we didn't know how to create a fade effect but make the two shots visible for a long period of time. We tried lots of different methods in order to get the desired effect that we all wanted but none of them worked. So we tried not using a fade effect and just decreasing the opacity of one of the shots enabling you to see both of the shots on top of each other at the same time. This worked out very well and we were very pleased with the result.

CD Cover

When making the CD cover I tried to keep it similar to the original CD cover to make it more recognisable, so that you can tell that it is Adele's album. I did this by using the same font and colour scheme.

This is the front cover of the CD. I used an image that I took when filming the video and used this as the image for the front cover because I think that this captures her emotions towards the song that she is singing to make the audience connect with her and the song more. I used the same font that is used on Adele's actual album, Century Gothic, and used the same shade of green so that it matches with Adele's album more, making it more recognisable for the public.

This is the cover for the disc of the album. I used an image that was taken whilst I was filming the video and placed the name of the album '21' on top of this image. The reason why I did this was to make it relate directly to the video that I created, in order to show continuity in my work.

This is the inside cover of the CD which show part of the video that we filmed that includes a fade between two different scenes. I decided to use this image because it shows the artist of the CD and the main location in which I filmed in to relate it directly to my video. I have also done this because it shows the changes in location, like what I have filmed in my video, because it begins with Adele, then fades between Adele and the location and then ends with just the location. The bar in the centre shows were the inside cover would fold if this was placed on an actual CD.

This is the back cover of my CD which lists all of the songs that are on Adele's album 21. I have used exactly the same font, Century Gothic, as what is used on the actual album to relate it more to Adele's CD, as the whole project was to re-make part of a music video so I wanted to try and re-make parts of the CD to such as the font type and colours. I used this image of the location at the end of my video to show the different parts of my video through the cover of the CD. I included necessary details at the bottom, such as copyright details and a barcode, which are featured on every CD to create verisimilitude. The two bars which are on the sides of the back page show the strips of details which would be folded up this was placed on an actual CD.

Location List

At this moment we knew what music video  we were going to do so we looked at where would be best to shoot the video and in which location. As the music video features only a few shots, our location choices do no need to be all different. In the video Adele is pictured next to a lake,so we thought the marina in Hull would be a good place. We have various ideas of different locations of where we want to shoot and these are a few of the possible locations:

 Hull Marina

 Humber Bridge

 Queens Gardens

 Near The Deep

 Green Room

We narrowed it down to these possible locations above as they fit our criteria. After looking at the 60 second clip we want to re create, we found these locations in Hull would work best. This is because Adele features walking along the edge of a lake for the most part, so we looked at possible locations that fit this. After deliberating on locations we decided out of all these possible ones that Hull Marina and the green screen would work best.

We thought this because the marina features the river just like the Adele video, it also has a path which will allow us to film down it. It's the most suitable location for this section of the video, as it offers the best results. We've also chosen the green screen. We want to film here because of the end part of this clip were there is a fade to a close up of Adele's face. We want to re create the close up of Adele including the fade effect, and we feel this could be best achieved here.

Risk Assessment

Before creating our video we had to create a risk assessment to identify any risks and precautions that we need to be aware of in order to make sure that it was safe where and when we are filming. There are many features that we need to be careful about such as:
  • Be careful not to fall into the lake
  • Be careful that the actress does not fall over whilst she is turning around
  • Check the weather report, to make sure that it isn't going to be too windy to film and that it isn't raining as it isn't raining in the video that we are doing
  • Be careful of oncoming traffic
  • Ensure that the actress is not allergic to the make-up used in filming
  • Be aware that robbery could take place and the equipment may get stolen
  • Make sure that the tripod is still on the ground and not too close to the edge of the lake as the tripod and camera may fall into the lake, breaking the equipment and losing our work
These are the things that we need to be aware of when filming to make sure that no harm is going to come to the cast and

Lyric Timing

When preparing for making our video I had to figure out the lyric timing which means timing the lyrics so that they match the actors, making it look more realistic as it will look as if our actor is actually singing when actuallt they're not.

The first shot is 42 seconds long, which is a very long edit, that consists of Adele walking and singing besides a lake. This will be quite difficult to re-create because it is a very long shot so we need to make sure that my actors lips move in time with the song, or else it won't look believeable and we will have to film the whole shot again.

The second shot is 18 seconds long which is a fade of Adele's face over a lake with, what looks like, The Eiffel Tower in the background and a town with statues and a cathedral in it. These are two long shots of the background and Adele's face so we have to make sure that everything is perfect in the shot as it will be hard to get everything right for this amount of time, as most shots last for 2-3 seconds.

Song Choice

Over the next three weeks, me and my group are going to attempt to copy 60 seconds of the music video Someone Like You by Adele. We are going to use the same cinematography, mise-en-scene, sound and editing as used between 3:05 and 4:05 of this video. The reason why we decided to use this video is because we all like the black and white effect that has been placed on top of the whole video as it matches the slow song. We also think that this video will be possible to re-create as, when looking at possible videos to copy, they are set in a variety of different complex locations such as in a dancing studio or on a beach, which are locations that I don't have access to. The song consists of a very long edit which I think will be a challenge for our group to do because we have to make sure that everything in the shot is perfect and that there are no mistakes in the cinematography. We have decided to film between 3:05 and 4:05 of the video as we feel as if this uses the most effects due to the use of fading at the end of this time period.

Design Brief

To create a promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
·      A website homepage for the band;
·      A cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)
·      A magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package)

The two ancillary texts that I have decided to create are a cover and a magazine advertisement for the music video release as part of a digipak. The reason why I chose these ancillary texts are because I thoroughly enjoyed making the CD cover during the transition task and would love to make another one and I think that it will be fun creating a magazine advertisement as I have had experience with this during my preliminary task at AS Level (perfume advert) and would like to see how I have improved from the beginning of AS Level to the end of A2 Level, and compare my work.
